Think about something you wanted very much. Maybe it as a piece of jewelry. Maybe it was a new car. Maybe you wanted a cat or a dog. Maybe it was a toy of some sort or maybe it was as simple as a book. Whatever it was, you had to have it or life would just not be complete. For me, it was a Kitchen Aid mixer. I had to have it knowing if only I had that mixer, I would whip up amazing homemade pastas, to die for desserts, and I would be the envy of all Christmas cookie bakers.
Do you know where that mixer is now? It is sitting on a shelf in my pantry gathering dust. While I do pull it out occasionally, (and dust it off before I use it!) I quickly learned that no piece of kitchen equipment could turn me into a good cook. Those genes are under the sole ownership of my brother – the executive chef.
That mixer lost its luster within weeks of its purchase. There have been other items I have purchased with the same result. It held my attention until the next shiny thing came along that I just had to have. What is that thing or things for you?
Have you noticed its not much different with the relationships in our lives? How many of us take for granted our parents, spouses, children, friends? We knew if we just married Mr. Right, life would be perfect, and we would live happily ever after – until we didn’t.
The things of this world only bring us momentary pleasure. Sure, some moments last longer than others. Eventually though, the “thing” loses its shine, we grow comfortable in a relationship – even complacent and we yearn for that excitement that a new “thing” brings. In the end, the pet passes away, the car gets old and worn, the book goes on the shelf.
God, however, does not grow old. He does not pass away. “Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever.” (Heb 13:8 NLT) And if we are truly living for Him, each day will bring new joys, new wonders, new gifts from Him. He is our joy and that is a joy that cannot be diminished.
Keep your eyes focused on God. Spend time in His word. Get to know Him. Talk to Him. He is your constant. Only He can bring you never ending peace and joy. Put Him first above all else. “So you have sorry now, but I will see you again; then you will rejoice, and no one can rob you of that joy.” John 16:22
Just for today, won’t you focus on the important things in life – God, family, friends?
At the heart of life lie the relationships we have with other people.
