When you think of the “needy,” what is the image that comes to your mind? Do you imagine the homeless person you see begging on the street corner? Maybe you think of those who are victims of natural disasters in places like Haiti or perhaps the struggling single parent comes to mind. This morning, as I read Psalm 12, I realize I am one of the needy.

Because of the oppression of the weak and the groaning
of the needy, I will now arise, says the Lord.
Psalm 12:5

I have a good job. We are not struggling financially. I have a family that is supportive and friends I on whom I can rely. More than any of that, however, I am in need of a Savior. I am in need of my heavenly Father.

I am not, by myself, able to let go of me and my sinful nature. Society tells us to be self aware; take care of number one; be all that you can be. The reality is, we need to be Christ aware. We need to stop the self-idolization, let go of ourselves, and be one with our Lord. This wasn’t easy in the days of Abraham, Moses, or David. It is not any easier now. In fact, letting go of ourselves may be more difficult that ever. Only by letting go of our wants and needs, and becoming one with Christ, will we grow and become spiritually dependent on him. And that is where we want to be – no longer separate but one with our Lord. Complete in him and him alone.

When you bow down before the Lord and admit your dependence
on Him, He will lift you up and give you honor.
James 4:10

Just for today, walk in obedience with Christ, be one with him who saved us from ourselves.

 Have a blessed day!
