We are currently in a series titled Our Imperfect Family, with this week’s focus called “Making a Home Where Jesus is at Home.” Pastor Keith shared a story from the bible that is very familiar to me. It’s the story of Martha and Mary. Jesus comes to visit the women and while Mary is seated at Jesus feet, Martha is running around preparing a meal. I’ve always related to Martha since growing up my mother conditioned me to wait on others – set the table, mash the potatoes, pour drinks, collect, and wash the dirty dishes, – you get the point.

Today, Mother’s Day, brought back a different memory. As Pastor spoke about Mary sitting at Jesus’ feet listening to his every word, I remembered my mother. I recalled how I would get up in the morning and go into the kitchen where she would be sitting with my father at the table having coffee. I would sit at her feet and put my head in her lap, often she would run her hand through my hair. It was her way of showing love which is not something my mother often did. I loved my mother and moments like these were very special to me. The love I felt for her would overwhelm me and I wished they would never end.

I can only imagine how Mary must have had similar feelings sitting at the feet of Jesus hanging on his every word hoping the day would last forever. While we can’t physically sit at his feet and listen, we are able to figuratively sit at his feet and hear him by being in his word daily.

My relationship with my mother was important to me and while she may be gone now, Jesus is always with us, and he reminds us only one thing is worth being concerned about and that is our relationship with him.

“Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed — or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:41-42
