There is no doubt in our house when it’s feeding time as Attie, Cooper, and Brady – our much loved 4-legged kiddos – will find one of us, jump on our laps (the smallest weighs about 50 lbs.), dance around, or whine to get our attention. As I stand up to stretch, the three of them beeline to their kennels where their bowls are waiting to be filled with Salmon flavored kibble.

When I feed the kids, I do so in a particular order. Cooper gets his food first because he takes the longest to eat. Eating one piece at a time and often getting distracted worrying if one of the other two will steal his ball, Cooper will run in and out of his kennel torn between the ball and his food.

Brady is fed last. He is the smallest of the three, if you can call 50 pounds small. Brady finishes in record time because he gets less food than the other two and because he doesn’t realize he is supposed to chew his food before swallowing it. He spends the next 10 minutes trying to sneak in and steal food from the bowls of the other two.

Attie is the most food motivated of the three. While Cooper will leave his food for his ball and Brady can sometimes get distracted by a squirrel, Attie is all about the food. And like any good foodie, she takes her time with it and paces herself. She wants to enjoy the salmon flavor in every bite.

Watching them, I wonder. Which am I most like when it comes to God’s word? Am I like Cooper? Easily distracted and pulled away from my time with God by the things of this world? Errands to run, chores to do, activities that provide instant gratification.

Are there mornings when I’m more like Brady? I pull out my devotionals and bible reading plan but race through them not taking the time to really think about and meditate on what I’ve just read. Checking them off my list and moving on to the next item or task.

I hope and pray most days, I’m like Attie rushing to spend time with the Lord and once there, slowing down so I can savor his word. Reading it bit by bit, tasting it, noticing it’s texture and flavor. Paying attention to how it can be applied to my life, letting it nourish me from the inside out and fill me up with the promises and goodness of the Lord.

Now that I’ve asked myself this question, feeding the pups each day can serve as a daily reminder. God’s word isn’t meant to be wolfed down or gobbled up. It’s meant to be enjoyed with each bite bringing me into a satisfying and fulfilled relationship with Him.

Just for today, spend time with God and relish in his love, grace, mercy, and promises.

Have a blessed day!
