I’m sitting at my desk and watching out the window as the wind shakes the now dead leaves from the branches of our oak trees. They cover the ground much as a fresh snowfall covers the ground in other parts of the country. My husband will spend Saturday raking them up to be disposed of when the trash man comes to collect. The trees rid themselves of their dead leaves each winter here in Florida making room for fresh buds of leaves, flowers, and fruit.

We too, need to rid ourselves of those things that no longer offer us life. Throughout the year, we often find ourselves backsliding into old habits of sin. Sins that are like spoiled fruit or diseased limbs draining our lives of life-giving purpose. As we shed the sins that have crept back in, we make room for the buds of kindness, compassion, mercy, grace, and love for others.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

What is it you need to shed? For me, it’s the need for perfection in all I do. It’s not trusting the Lord with every aspect of my life. It’s forgetting that life isn’t about me. It’s about others – being of service to them, being in relationship with them, and loving them in the same way Jesus loves me.

Is it the same for you? Maybe it’s forgiving someone, maybe it’s reconnecting with someone, maybe it’s reconnecting with your Savior.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 2 Corinthians 5:17

May your days be blessed!
