Our services, like many, start with worship music. Our worship leader is not a talkative man. Today, however, he shared his story with us. I won’t’ go into details. Suffice it to say, like many of us, he was broken. He shared his story to make us think. He asked us, if someone came into our church who was broken and they came with the intent that this experience would determine if they would follow Christ based on how they were treated, would they come back? Would they give their life to Christ?

Our worship leader wasn’t judging us or trying to guilt us. He was simply putting it out there for us to think about – to ask ourselves. He then sang the song “Madly” by Charles Hall.

Let what we do in here
Fill the streets out there.

Does what we say in church translate to how we speak outside church walls? Does how we act in church coincide with how we act outside? Are we as merciful to the broken as Christ is to us? Or do we cast our judgement on those who are not like us, who think differently than us, or who don’t conform to our idea of how people should act?

How different would this world be if we exchanged our righteousness for Jesus’ righteousness! If we want to repair a relationship, a community, or our world, it’s time we stop waiting for the other person to make the first move. Take the first step. Then take the second and the third. Take however many steps it takes. Jesus never stops chasing us. Let’s follow his example and flood our homes, our communities, and our world with love, mercy, compassion, and a helping hand to those in need.

Just for today, show compassion, mercy, and love to those you come across and lay aside feelings that don’t belong in a world of grace!

Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.
